Here in Brazil the houses are built with bricks, sand and cement and the U.S. are built largely of wood. Why are not made like in Brazil? No more resist natural disasters? Tornado =/= Typhoon A typhoon is a hurricane/cyclone I think because wood is cheaper and most Americans do not stay in a house forever, they move every few years to a different I have lived in cement houses in Nigeria, UAE, India, and Malaysia

One reason is that wood is cheaper. And also, in many of the areas that were hit, tornadoes are a very rare occurrence. Especially tornadoes of that magnitude. I have lived here my entire life and only seen one small one. They just don't happen here. So we have never really had to worry about building tornado-resistant houses. And besides, with a storm like that it wouldn't make much of a difference anyway. In the towns that were hit the hardest, EVERYTHING was destroyed, regardless of whether it was wood, cement, bricks, or whatever. Tornadoes are nasty things.

In places where you're in danger of a certain disaster, yeah, a lot of houses'll be prepared. My house is stone, personally. However, many houses are not built to be truly permanent. Another problem is that wood or brick has been the staple of our houses for a while, because it's cheaper and easier. Other times, companies make "cookie cutter" houses, so there's not exactly a lot of thought and care going into it. A lot of people don't have the energy or money to have their house built how they want it, so if the house is made by somebody who's not going to live there, natural disasters might not be their top priority. Finally, some people are stupid. So, there you go.

There are brick and cement houses that have been destroyed too. Tornadoes are extremely destructive. Let us pray for those who have lost their homes and loved ones recently.

Well take into account the size of our country the number of houses damaged or destroyed is minimal in comparison.....that to goes for the number of deaths, though their deaths are not to be minimized......there are just certain NATURAL DISASTERS that no building can with stand....Mother Mature is force not to be reckoned with SHE rules this planet with an iron fist and when SHE decides to let lose SHE does....

Alabama was hit the hardest and I live here and has been helping in the clean up. We really don't have cold winters most of the time. It hardly ever snows but the summers are extremely hot. Usually in the 100s with the humidity index.
