I live in Brazil and I see on tv typhoons and tornadoes that are destroying many cities in the U.S.?
Here in Brazil the houses are built with bricks, sand and cement and the U.S. are built largely of wood. Why are not made like in Brazil? No more resist natural disasters? Thanks to those who enlighten me. Saved By Grace. Thanks for the reply. I thought that buildings in the U.S. were made of wood for heating help in time of snow

Home Depot and Lowes will go out of business otherwise.
2 :
Because all that money that can be used to re-design the houses is being spent on a pointless war in the middle east.
3 :
Tornado =/= Typhoon A typhoon is a hurricane/cyclone I think because wood is cheaper and most Americans do not stay in a house forever, they move every few years to a different I have lived in cement houses in Nigeria, UAE, India, and Malaysia
4 :
One reason is that wood is cheaper. And also, in many of the areas that were hit, tornadoes are a very rare occurrence. Especially tornadoes of that magnitude. I have lived here my entire life and only seen one small one. They just don't happen here. So we have never really had to worry about building tornado-resistant houses. And besides, with a storm like that it wouldn't make much of a difference anyway. In the towns that were hit the hardest, EVERYTHING was destroyed, regardless of whether it was wood, cement, bricks, or whatever. Tornadoes are nasty things.
5 :
In places where you're in danger of a certain disaster, yeah, a lot of houses'll be prepared. My house is stone, personally. However, many houses are not built to be truly permanent. Another problem is that wood or brick has been the staple of our houses for a while, because it's cheaper and easier. Other times, companies make "cookie cutter" houses, so there's not exactly a lot of thought and care going into it. A lot of people don't have the energy or money to have their house built how they want it, so if the house is made by somebody who's not going to live there, natural disasters might not be their top priority. Finally, some people are stupid. So, there you go.
6 :
There are brick and cement houses that have been destroyed too. Tornadoes are extremely destructive. Let us pray for those who have lost their homes and loved ones recently.
7 :
Well take into account the size of our country the number of houses damaged or destroyed is minimal in comparison.....that to goes for the number of deaths, though their deaths are not to be minimized......there are just certain NATURAL DISASTERS that no building can with stand....Mother Mature is force not to be reckoned with SHE rules this planet with an iron fist and when SHE decides to let lose SHE does....
8 :
houses are built like car models renewabale in short duration planned obsolescence
9 :
Alabama was hit the hardest and I live here and has been helping in the clean up. We really don't have cold winters most of the time. It hardly ever snows but the summers are extremely hot. Usually in the 100s with the humidity index.

Live and Work in Brazil for American Graduate

Live and Work in Brazil for American Graduate?
I would like to live and work in urban Brazil. I don't speak Portuguese, though I understand a lot of Spanish so I could probably learn quicker than most. I am thinking of spending a summer there but I need a job to support myself. Anyone know of opportunities for English speakers? My degree is in mathematics.

I don't know about for mathematics, but they are always looking for americans to teach children or students in general English. But in the Urban area it gets pretty expensive its not cheap to live in these kinds of places. Your Spanish would help only if you speak slowly. Portuguese is a mix of Spanish, French, and Italian. Your best beat is to go for a vacation, ask around while your there and see what people say.
2 :
The only easy way is to get a job as an english teacher.
3 :
Yes you can go to brazil, but the unemployment is very high there. And please, if you know spanish, dont speak it in brazil. Stick to english or learn portuguese before. Spanish is freak and ugly. The hispanic accent annoys the brazilians.
4 :
Well, your ability to speak Spanish won't be as useful as you might think if you come to Brazil. And please, do not speak Spanish to brazilians on the streets, because A: we won't get what you're saying B: it's annoying and gives me headaches C: people will think you're just another foreigner who doesn't know that we speak Portuguese in Brazil. Well, as it's not that common to find people who speak fluent English in Brazil, you should really try to learn Portuguese. And as for job opportunities, unfortunately there isn't much that you could do here, as long as you can't speak Portuguese. But I guess you could teach English giving private lessons, while you learn Portuguese, and then you'd have to go looking for a job at schools or something like that, since your degree is in mathematics. Hope that was helpful. Good luck :)

For one thing, it is somewhat hard to get a Visa to go live in Brazil. This is their way to stick it to America because it is equally as hard to get a Visa for South American's to come here. Secondly, it would be nice if you could start learning Portuguese if you're planning to go there in the future. But also you could learn Spanish wich is a little easier and simmilar to Portugese, as many Brazilians understand Spanish.

I am A U.S.Citizen I go back and forth to Brazil all the time my Family has a ranch there. First go visit as a tourist then see if that is truly the place you want to be. Learn Portuguese and stay inside the city limits, its a country with very laxed laws. Don't assume its all beauty and nightlife. Step one foot out of Rio and you will see the real Brazil.
3 :
Sorry , what are going to do in Rio apart from a Marrying a beautiful Mulatto woman .? Lets stay positive. First you need to see a consular officer at the Brazilian Consulate: http://www.brazilian-consulate.org/ Also don't waste your time by learning Spanish, learn Portuguese. If you invest $50000.00 in Brazil you probably can obtain a residence visa , but go to the Consulate first

I like Brazil also and yes it is very easy to get papers for Brazil. Check out their embassy here for visa requirements. http://www.brasilemb.org/
