I want to get some money from my mother (living in Brazil). I live in OR, USA. What is the best way to do this. I have been advised to open an HSBC or Citibank account in my name in US and she does an international transfer through her hsbc/citibank account. I am afraid I might end up paying too much fees at both sides of the transaction. Anyone help?

The best bet is to have Mother inquire to HSBC in Brazil about their Premier Service for sending your child to school abroad. While Mother is asking the bank about fees you can check out the fees on Western Union. I think these are the 2 best options for finding the lowest fees and ease.

Depending on the amount you are sending, I would recommend you buying one of those Visa TravelMoney cards in Brazil, and have her send it to you. This is effectively a pre-paid credit card, so you can add funds to it in Brazil, and you will be able to use the card in the US to make purchases without paying any fees, or use the card to withdraw money from ATMs at some small fee. http://usa.visa.com/personal/cards/prepaid/visa_travel_money.html
